Lois Fletcher - I Am What I Am
Sunday, July 13th, 2008
Issued March 1974 on Playboy 50049.
Lois Fletcher is from Vancouver. She began her singing career in church and school choirs, and taught folk songs to children. She appeared on Canadian television, which led to her joining a folk group, who appeared in New York. While there, attending a concert at Carnegie Hall by The New Christy Minstrels, Lois met group founder Randy Sparks. Later, when Sparks decided to form another group to serve as a “farm team” for the New Christy Minstrels’ ever-changing roster, The Back Porch Majority was born. Lois spent some time as a member of this group. After they broke up in 1967, Lois went solo, and made four documented singles (possibly more), one for Columbia, two for Playboy and one for Quality.
This is her most well-known song; it has a certain Jamaican influence, somewhere between ska and reggae, which wasn′t popular yet. “I Am What I Am” charted in RPM on March 16, 1974 at #86, and reached #7 nationally on June 25th.
The recording you hear is frankensteined from two different sources. The song appears on “Canadian Mint” on K-Tel TC 215, but they edited out a section before the coda. I have inserted that section from another, inferior recording of the single. The frequency response of the other person’s cartridge is nowhere near as good as mine, and there was no way I could match the EQ to make the edit seamless (I spent way too much time on it without success). So it kinda sticks out like a sore thumb - but at least we have the whole record now.
